The Unitas Communities Board of Directors is comprised of representation from both Morningstar Living and Moravian Manor Communities as well as that of the Eastern District Synod of the Moravian Church, who sponsored each of the communities years ago to originally serve their aging church population.

Chair
Chris Brown is a Registered Landscape Architect and ISA Certified Arborist currently presiding as the owner and principal of Brown Design Corporation. Mr. Brown received his Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Temple University after serving as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.
He serves as Treasurer of the Old Allentown Preservation Association Board, is the Chairman of the City of Allentown Planning Commission, and Chairman of the City of Allentown Shade Tree Commission. He served on the Morningstar Living Board of Directors from January 2016 until October 31, 2023. As of November 1, 2023, Mr. Brown was appointed Unitas Communities Board Chair.
Bernadette Taylor, PhD
Vice Chair
Bernadette Taylor is Senior Executive Vice President – Chief Human Resources Officer at Fulton Financial Corporation. Bernadette began her tenure at Fulton Financial in 1994 as Corporate Training Director and moved into her current role in 2015. Bernadette oversees Human Resources for the Corporation. Bernadette is also a member of the executive management team.
Bernadette has resided in Lancaster, PA since 1994, and served on the boards of Lancaster YWCA, Hempfield Foundation, Lancaster Museum of Art, Lancaster Modern Quilt Guild, and Moravian Manor Communities. She is presently Vice Chair of the Unitas Communities Board of Directors.
Prior to working at Fulton Financial Corporation, Bernadette worked for MetLife as a Senior Consultant in the Training & Development and Personnel Research areas. Bernadette has an MS/PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey and a BS in Psychology from Fordham University in New York. She lives in Lancaster with her husband, Matt, and has two adult children, Luke and Madeline.
Ben Atwater
Treasurer
Ben Atwater is a founder and partner at Atwater Malick, a financial advisory and investment management firm based in Lancaster, PA. Ben collaborates with individuals to define, plan and implement solutions to their personal and financial goals. Before co-founding Atwater Malick in 2008, Ben worked at Bank of New York Mellon in their Private Wealth Management group where he focused on trusts and endowments.
Ben has been extensively involved in the Lancaster community over the years, serving as chair of The Lancaster County Community Foundation, Forever Lancaster and The American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley. He also served as the Treasurer of the Occupational Development Center, Power Packs Project, Milagro House and Moravian Manor Communities. In addition, Ben has served on various other committees for non-profit organizations, including Lancaster General Health Foundation and Hospice and Community Care.
Ben holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Miami University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Lebanon Valley College.
Ben lives in Lititz, PA with his wife, Melissa, their children, Josie, Alexis and Michael, and their two dogs, Nova and Bella. Ben and Melissa enjoy hosting friends and family, playing tennis and golf, and traveling.
Theodore Lewis, Esq.
Secretary
Theodore R. Lewis has been a practicing Attorney at Law since 1971 with a concentration in the areas of real estate, decedent’s estates, elder law, land use planning, and zoning. He is a partner in the law firm of Lewis and Walters in Easton, Pennsylvania. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Muhlenberg College in Allentown. Mr. Lewis is admitted to practice before the trial and appellate courts of Pennsylvania and the Federal Courts including the Supreme Court of the United States.
He is a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and Northampton County Bar Association. He has served for over six years as a court appointed Chairman of the Board of Viewers in condemnation cases. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at Northampton County Community College, teaching courses in real estate law, business law, and estate planning. Mr. Lewis has lectured for the Pennsylvania Land Title Institute in the areas of decedent’s estates and the title insurance policy and for the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors on topics of Easements, The Recording Statutes, and Boundary Law.
He was a member and then President of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity and is also a past president of the Nazareth Rotary Club. Mr. Lewis continues to serve as solicitor for two zoning hearing boards, positions which he has held for over 40 and 30 years respectively.
Brian Black
Brian Black has been a shareholder and consultant at North Group Consultants, Lititz, PA, for more than eleven years. In his consulting role, he supports leaders as well as family businesses and nonprofit organizations in developing toward their highest potential. His work at North Group includes executive coaching, facilitating leadership team meetings, owners’ meetings, Board meetings and strategic planning. Brian has a particular focus on ownership and leadership succession planning for multigenerational family-owned businesses.
Prior to joining North Group and continuing into a portion of his time at North Group, Brian practiced law in southcentral Pennsylvania for more than 20 years. In the midst of practicing law, he also served for 15 years in pastoral ministry in the Church of the Brethren and for 4 ½ years in executive leadership at Brethren Village, a continuing care retirement community located just south of Lititz, Pennsylvania.
In addition to the Unitas Board of Directors, Brian serves on the Boards of the Lititz Mutual Family of Insurance Companies, and the Board and Executive Committee of Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine Foundation.
He received his undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and English from Franklin & Marshall College, and his JD from Villanova University School of Law.
Brian’s greatest “achievement” is the gift of his family. He is a grateful husband, a blessed father of four married children and a stepson, and an “over the moon” grandfather.
Geoffrey W. Eddowes
Mr. Eddowes serves as Senior Vice President, Hospital Operations for Penn Medicine/ Lancaster General Health. His responsibilities include oversight of all non-nursing operations within Lancaster General Hospital.
Prior to joining Lancaster General Health in March 2006, Geoff served as President and CEO for Luthercare, a retirement management company based in Lititz, PA. He has also previously served as Regional Vice President, Operations for American Retirement Corporation, and Vice President, Operations for Willow Valley Communities.
Prior to his more than 35 years in healthcare operations, Geoff served as Country Director for Food for the Hungry International, working in East Africa.
Geoff earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.
Richard L. Jackson, RLA
Until retiring at the end of 2024, Rick Jackson was Vice President of Landscape Architecture at ELA Group, Inc., with offices in Lititz, State College, and Butler (PA). A graduate of the Pennsylvania State University (1979 BS: Landscape Architecture), Rick earned his professional registration in 1983 from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was also registered to practice Landscape Architecture in the State of Maryland.
Currently, Rick serves on the Unitas Board of Directors and the Moravian Manor Board, is a Past Co-Chair of the Board of Tenfold/Tenfold Community Lending (formerly Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership/LHOP and Tabor Community Services). Present at its birth, Rick was also engaged in advocacy, collaboration, and education efforts of the Coalition for Sustainable Housing, an outreach formerly of LHOP and now of Tenfold.
As a volunteer “Partner4Place,” Rick assisted in the implementation of Places2040, the 2018 Update to Lancaster County’s Comprehensive Plan. For many years, Rick was a member of the Urban Land Institute, Building Industry Association/BIA of Lancaster County, and the Commercial & Industrial Real Estate Council of the Lancaster County Association of Realtors.
Rick is a Past President of both the Lancaster County BIA and Coalition for Smart Growth. He has also served on the Governing Board of the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness and on the Board of the Lancaster County Convention Center Authority.
Rick and his wife, Mary Lou, are parents and grandparents of a multi-racial family and, as of March 2025, are residents of Minneapolis, MN.
The Rev. Melissa L. Johnson
Melissa “Missy” Johnson is originally from Nazareth, PA and resides there currently with her husband, Frank, and their children, Morgen and Quincy. She serves as the president of the Eastern District Executive Board of the Moravian Church, Northern Province.
She graduated from Moravian College in 1995 and earned her Master of Divinity degree from Moravian Theological Seminary in 2001. Ordained in the Moravian Church in 2001, she has served as pastor of congregations in New York and Pennsylvania. She also served on the staff of Moravian Theological Seminary as the Director of Admissions and Student Life. Missy was appointed to the board by virtue of her position with the Eastern District of the Moravian Church.
Rex Knowlton
Rex Knowlton is from south Jersey, currently living in Cinnaminson with his wife, Gina. Rex and Gina are parents of two children and have been blessed with six grandchildren.
He serves as the Treasurer of the Board of World Mission of the Moravian Church; a position held since 2015. Rex has served on several non-profit boards over the years including having served on the Board of Moravian Manor, including serving as Vice Chair, Treasurer and Chair.
Rex graduated from Rutgers University and has a career in transportation and accounting, including his current role as CFO of the Community Transportation Association of America, a position he has held since 2016.
He has been a lifelong member of the Palmyra Moravian Church in Cinnaminson NJ including serving on the Board of Trustees and for the last thirty plus years has served as Treasurer of the congregation. Rex enjoys all sports Philly, especially the Eagles and the Phillies.
Edward Nawrocki
Mr. Nawrocki was named President, East Region & Anderson Campus in 2018. Prior to serving as President of the East Region, he was President of the Anderson Campus since its opening in 2011. He was President of St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital from 2004 – 2011.
Mr. Nawrocki earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Network, Mr. Nawrocki worked at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Sentara Health System in Virginia, and the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
He currently serves as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Industrial Engineering Advisory Board and is a community volunteer for HealthSpark. He previously served as a member of the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) Board, local United Way, and various Chamber of Commerce Boards.
Heather Hartung
Heather Hartung serves as Senior Director of Programs and Initiatives at the Association of Theological Schools (the accrediting agency for graduate theological education in North America). Prior to joining ATS, Rev. Dr. Hartung served as vice president and dean of Moravian and Lancaster Theological Seminaries. She began teaching at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2012, where she was appointed associate dean for academic affairs in 2015, and vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty in 2016. She held the position of associate professor of church history at both schools. Ordained in the Moravian Church, Heather served as a trustee of Moravian Theological Seminary for 10 years.
Among her publications, her book, Madness: American Protestant Responses to Mental Illness, explores reactions to mental illnesses from the colonial era through the 21st century. Her service in theological education follows a career in engineering and marketing in technology companies, including IBM.
Hartung holds a ThD and MDiv from Duke University Divinity School, and an MBA and MEM (engineering management) from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
Heather and her husband Dave love spending time together outdoors. Together, they have three adult sons who live on opposite sides of Pennsylvania.
Stacey Prohaska
Stacey joined St. Luke’s University Health Network in March 2023 as a Director of Development. In her role, she partners with individuals and families who want to be more involved as donors, volunteers, and informed advocates of St. Luke’s mission. Stacey also serves as the Development liaison and content expert for St. Luke’s Penn Foundation Mental Health Services. To date, she has raised more than $650,000 for the Network.
Prior to St. Luke’s, Stacey served as Phoebe Ministries’ Executive Director of the Office of Philanthropy for five years. She provided overall leadership for Phoebe’s Philanthropy Program, including major gifts and grants, annual and planned giving, special events, stewardship, board and volunteer management, and strategic development opportunities. Her favorite part of the job was getting to know the residents of Phoebe’s four campuses.
Stacey’s career in development and communications spans more than 25 years. She became a Certified Fund-Raising Professional (CFRE credential) in 2019. Prior to Phoebe, she served in a variety of fundraising and marketing roles for Muhlenberg, Cedar Crest and Rosemont Colleges, Circle of Seasons Charter School, and the Allentown School District Foundation.
Stacey earned a master’s degree in English & publishing from Rosemont College, and her bachelor’s degree in communication, summa cum laude, at Cedar Crest College. She lives in Allentown with her two children, Sophia (16) and Sam (12), and their mischievous cat, Hazel. Ms. Prohaska was elected to the Unitas Board on May 8, 2025.
